My take on how non-competitive picks in League of Legends deal with their sorrow
state of affairs: 1.0.0.107

pencil-sketched and inked with thin steadler markers.

Upd:

thanks for the comments everyone

I don't think there is too much object for confusion but I'll just add a character listing, for the ones you might have missed =)

Foreground right: Blind monk (deleted character from Beta, an appropriate professionnal conversion I reckon)
At the bar from the Left: Gangplank, Garen, Veigar, Mordekaiser, Swain, Nunu
First row from the left: Soraka, Trundle, Ryze, Jax, Katarina, Twitch
Second row from the left: Cassie, Nasus, Sona, Heimer, Kayle, Tryndamere (For greater equal opportunity) Ezreal
Mid to right: Leblanc, Galio, Mundo, Singed, Nidalee, Teemo, Alistar
Card Table on the right: Yi, Tristana (Back of the head),Karthus

I had fun doing this, but its only 28 or so characters out of about sixty, eventually, there will be more ground to cover'

[I posted that as a comment but is was too massive, so I ll just put it here]

Hello, thank you for the on-going comments, my drawing habit being compulsive (haven't done anything in months) it serves as a motivation to get back to it at some point.
Also, this is all kinda outdated now! Originally this was a fairly accurate (I hope) depiction of the low-tier end of the league of legends character roster at the time (patch 1.0.0.107). I'd add that it did not depict ACTUAL usefulness of characters, but rather their popularity on the somewhat competitive scene (streams, tier-lists, interpretations of the metagame etc). Thought it would be fun to do a run-through now, as things have changed quite a lot. Still; disclaimer, this is simply an interpretation of trends as I understand them, being at best an very average player.

Blind monk is no longer a spirit of times past, he's back in game... but regarded as pretty damn weak by most sources. He would probably want to take his job back.

Gangplank has been revamped a bit, but although oddly I see him fairly often he doesn't really shine overall.

Garen remains a rare sight, I figure he still has "fallen from grace" status.

Veigar is still a pretty risky and uncommon pick at any rate.

Morde is popular in lower tier of play (my tier) for lack of knowledge about counters to his narrow straight-forward push frenzy.

Swain! swain is loved more and more on the competitive scene and I see him picked regularly in tournament games, he probably fled this god forsaken joint.

Even moreso than swain, Nunu is actually a prized pick as a jungler now, ever-present in high elo games.

Soraka is back under the spotlight and as far as I've seen rivals the most solid supports on all accounts.

Trundle has also pillar'd his way to a very respectable status.

Ryze made a gigantic leap to the top of the caster-pile thanks to his revamp, making him (a little too) unique as a (little too) tanky faceroll caster, incredibly solid, he's miles away.

Jax on the other hand, probably still keeps his mind off his condition by ogling at waitresses.

Katarina never got a true chance at redemption despite timid tweaks, and well, still gets ogled at.

Twitch is a pretty good pub-stomper in the hands of competent players (not me), but he still lags behind the golden ad-carry crowd.

Cass is still somewhat misunderstood despite nice tweaks and remains too difficult to play effectively, she might just need someone, somewhere, to consistently melt faces witn her and get her off minimum wage.

Nasus is pretty much overshadowed by his crocodillian bro and a rare pick overall.

Sona is pianoing her way (almost wrote fingering) back on the scene after a long lapse of neglect, thanks to some steady improvements.

Heimer is a good poker but if he can't decide the terms of the fight, he falls short, hence his absence from the scene. How's that armor-shedding doing?

Unfortunate Kayle is pretty much pole-bound until further notice, shunned and disregarded, her only comfort is that she might soon see her sister also strip for scraps, the once revered morgana, now the poor man's lux.

Tryndamere is another lower pub-stomper, but he is so easily shut down that his particular style just doesn't shine, well, he still has his health.

despite a few attemps at a comeback, ezreal still sustains his dreamy gaze through thick smoke clouds, as other do his job so much better, why bother.

Leblanc has to pray pretty hard for a kassadin ban and there's still safer and less ultra-specialized AP contenders out there, she's cool, but she still has to take the top off.

Galio makes a timid reappearance these days, but he doesn't pack the punch he used and remains in the shadow of that other whiny dead kid with an aoe ult. and most of
the others.

Mundo is single minded and self reliant, makes him good in some cases, makes him marginally useful in most, however, he's probably exactly where he wants to be.

Singed has reemerged as a monolithic waste spewing nightmare, earning him a fair amount of affection, seems that he regained his focus, put the lid back on and went back to work.

Nidalee is in a somewhat better place, her late game apparently isn't as bad it used to be, she now does most of her spirit-healing in-game.

Teemo, whom I hate, expect no love for him on my part, is now a good pick. Whatever, I don't wanna know, he'll still get thrown out.

Alistar is back and lives it up like a grazing panzer, he roams all day and basically is the poster boy for the North American metagame. Cool thing is, he still gets to headbutt-smash teemo around.

Yi is also more present as a jungler, still not an all-around favorite, but he's less of a familiar face at the poker table.

Tristana isn't exactly hated, most seem to agree that she's very viable, just a bit blurry in the picture. She'll have to find other poker mates, else she'll be outa here.

Karthus is a euro-fave and overall he benefits from an ever-growing love for global ults, the prospect of spending his life and the ones after that losing all that gold from his hard-earned kill-steals to a freakin yordle definitely got his bones rattling again.

If I were to draw something new according to my previous criteria, I wouldn't be able to replace all the departing chars, indeed I have the feeling the game is a little more balanced as I see more variety in terms of heroes, particularly in solo queue. I am actually realizing that just now, as the only new characters that would make a definite appearance are Sivir (who got hit so hard) and morgana (and even then it would be more of a "fallen from grace" thing, as she's still pretty good).
